Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When a close friend has to shave their head after cancer treatment what do you do? You get a group of mates together to shave theirs too. That is what four work colleagues at Russells Paint and Panel will be doing this Friday in support of their friend, and of the Marlborough Cancer Society. Business owner Malc Russell and his employees Andrew Frew, Nick Berry and Daniel Ryan (pictured) will go under the shaver at 12:30pm, and for them there will be no regrets. “Someone we care a lot about had to shave their head because of cancer and were a little embarrassed, so Andrew suggested we all do the same to show we are supporting them 100 per cent,” Malc said. Rescue Ride draws crowds of motorcyclists By Celeste Lodewyk The Rescue Ride held last Saturday was a revving success, according to Ulysses Club Marlborough member Murray Brooks. A convoy rode from Havelock through to Blenheim's Waterlea Racecourse where they parked and enjoyed a barbecue lunch and collected donations for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Service. The Ulysses Club sold pins specially designed with a helicopter on them, which will also benefit the rescue service. According to Murray, the convoy included 30 riders from Nelson, a group of professional firefighters, a group from the Patriots Defence Force group as well as Ulysses members. "It was a wonderful turnout and we were thrilled with the community support," he said. A representative from the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Service spoke to the crowd and expressed their appreciation for the fundraising. Patriots Defence Force motorcyclists (pictured) were among the 163 who supported Saturday’s Rescue Ride. Photo provided.

Young couple achieve home ownership

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim couple Nick Sowman and Chelsea van der Burgh (pictured) are proof that it is possible to own a home in your early 20’s, and that moving to Australia isn't always the more profitable answer to ‘getting ahead.’ Nick, 24, sales and marketing assistant to Ben Mackay of Harcourts and Chelsea 21, administrator for Marlborough Roads, purchased their first home earlier this year, featuring three bedrooms and a large back-section in Redwoodtown. It ticked all the boxes for the couple who were looking for a “stepping stone” property. “With my background in real estate I knew this was a good buy,” Nick said. Their biggest hurdle was being approved finance, and like many Kiwis Nick and Chelsea moved to Australia to earn more money so they could return home with a deposit. “Everyone was doing the Aussie thing so we moved to Sydney in the hope we could earn enough for a deposit on a home.” “What we found was that what you earned and what you spent on living there was equivalent, so we moved back home.” “It turns out that we are paid more here in our current jobs, so it showed us that the grass isn't always greener on the other side,” Nick said. Last November they met with a bank to apply for finance themselves and were turned down. They then met with broker Jac Lockington who advised them to wait a few more months, save more money and be in their jobs for more than 12 months.

Man falls from tree A Blenheim arborist is in a stable condition in Wairau Hospital after falling from a tree on Friday. The man was working at the Duncannon Holiday Park when he fell 15 metres from a tree. He suffered leg, back and head injuries.

Ministry to see report The report concerning the future of Marlborough’s colleges is nearly complete. Facilitator Janet Kelly said it is due to be handed to the Ministry of Education by the end of the week.

Man hospitalised Nick and Chelsea began began their search for a house in March and realised then they had more money available. “We found this house on a Friday, Nick texted the agent that night and by Saturday we had it in contract,” Chelsea said. “I only needed to see half of the house before I knew it was the one,” Nick said. To purchase the house they put down a 20 per cent deposit which was made up of a

KiwiSaver withdrawal, a government subsidy from Housing New Zealand and their own savings. “We were very grateful to Jac Lockington for taking care of the whole process for us, it's what made the journey enjoyable,” Nick said. Since moving in they have rented out two rooms to flatmates and say their future goal is to build and use this home as a rental.

A 41-year-old Blenheim man was taken to the Nelson Hospital Emergency Department in a moderate condition after being pinned under a tree yesterday. The man was part of a team felling a large pine tree in the Waihopai Valley area when he became caught during the tree falling. The man suffered chest and leg injuries.

Roundabout completion less than two months away Heading in and out of town this summer looks set to become a bit easier. Work on the new Springlands roundabouts at Murphys Road, and Boyce Street, is on schedule, and due for completion by the middle of October. Both temporary roundabouts have been installed. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said work had continued over winter, in the hope the area would be ready for summer. “We’ve had to contend with winter weather, which disrupts the work from time to time, but

we wanted the new roundabouts in place before summer traffic builds up and so this entrance to Blenheim is ready for the holiday season.” Mr Porter said work on telecommunications equipment underground may temporarily divert traffic around the Murphys Road roundabout during construction. The speed limits on approach to the roundabouts have been reduced to 30 kilometres an hour. Mr Porter said that would help work continue on the uneven road surfaces, and enable drivers to get used to the roundabouts.

Slow start for whitebaiters

Conference returns The New Zealand Winegrowers Romeo Bragato Conference is returning for another year. The event begins today, and ends on Friday at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The conference, in its 20th year, is the largest wine conference on the New Zealand calendar. It will include seminars on advocacy, marketing, sustainability and technological advancements. J ohn Fre eth without any left over whitebait.

By Adam Poulopoulos It has been a quiet beginning to Marlborough’s whitebait season, but those in the know are not too concerned. The season began on August 15, with some heading down to the Wairau Diversion early to reserve their spots, and make the most of the early yield. The catch so far has been small though, with most reporting about half a kilo. John Freeth, a Rarangi local who has been whitebaiting at the Wairau River for over half a century, said it had been a tough start. “The first two days weren’t too bad, but since then it’s dropped off, and there’s been hardly any. “The tides haven’t been very good, and they’re only starting to come good again now, so we might get some this week.

“It’s early days yet.” Yesterday the tide was due to come in after dark, at 7:30pm, making a productive day unlikely. In any case, John said it had been a better start than last year, when they lost the first week due to flooding. “It’s better when it doesn’t flood, because the river gets dirty and they don’t come in.” The last month of last year’s season was also lost. Arch Clark, who arrived on Friday to reserve his spot, said he had experienced a similar slow start. “We’ve caught enough to eat but not enough to save up. “It’s usually quiet at the start of the season. It gets better later on.” More fishermen are expected to descend on the river during Labour Weekend. Marlborough’s whitebait season finishes in late November.

Marlborough Scout zone leader Dean Marshall said the name could reflect Scouting or the historical and geographical area of the site, but was open to all suggestions. He said it was great Scouts had access to the site. “The best training and fun in Scouting is at camps. Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: What are some examples of changes Marlburians have asked to see

from council.

Brian Dawson Blenheim Provide effective community leadership, share more enthusiastically a powerful vision of the future, be clearer about what is expected of other organisations/ people, focusing on enabling development and economic growth, stop competing with private enterprise and sell non-strategic commercial properties.

Cynthia Brooks Blenheim There is obvious enthusiasm for the plans for a new cultural precinct in lower High and Wynen Streets which, once some pressing infrastructure “needs” such as upgrading certain rural water supplies - are resolved, will deliver an important piece of infrastructure for our region. I heartily supported council’s decision to stage the project out over the next few years.

John Leggett Blenheim

Constituents would like to see council working with business and industry and avoid where possible adversarial conflict. Smart and Connected has been developed to form better working relationships. More access to council information. MDC website now provides innovation such as smart maps.

Yet more transparency and accountability, spend on infrastructure not niceto-haves, be enabling to allow business to grow, stop the bullying and don’t be a roadblock, stop changing the CBD plan and actually deliver, be strong positive leaders, don’t use ‘consultants’, use our talented Marlburians instead.

The message from Marlburians as to council’s direction has been positive. The proposed Blenheim CBD development has overwhelming support following the annual plan process. Picton residents also want to see progress with plans for their CBD and foreshore now the uncertainty over the ferries is behind us.

Our oldest Volunteer, Mrs Elsa Cresswell, has just turned 90, and although now semi-retired, is always willing to come and lend a hand whenever called. On Sunday the 17th of August all volunteers were invited to a special afternoon tea, to say a big thank you to all those willing people, and to give them the opportunity to have a chat and meet up with fellow workers. Lamb the goat cheese maker Cranky Goat co-owner Simon Lamb has been around the world with the British military. The London-born businessman tells Adam Poulopoulos how his wife’s intervention led to their Kiwi move, and talks about their journey into the cheese making business. Not many people get the chance to put military veteran, artisan cheese maker and club rugby coach on their CV, but Simon Lamb is one of those people. The oldest of three boys, Simon was born in Chelsea and grew up in Herefordshire, a rural county near the Welsh border. After leaving school, he held a series of farming jobs before joining the British Army’s parachute regiment. He said his first conflict was the Falklands War. “I was 18 at the time, so I thought I was bulletproof, but I lost a lot of good friends there.” After an accident the next year, Simon was moved to the RAF Regiment Para Squadron, where he stayed for over 20 years. Simon’s career took him around the world, and he served in many areas including the Middle East, Africa, North America and Northern Ireland. “Some countries we were in had no sewage system and no drinking water,” he said. “War gives you perspective, and you develop a real black humour.” During his military years Simon married Hellene, and unbeknown to Simon at the time, she set the wheels in motion for their New Zealand move. “Hellene applied on my behalf for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. “I came home from rugby one day and there was an email saying ‘congratulations on completing phase one of the application process.’ I had no idea.” With daughters Rhianne and Hannah both completing different stages of their education, the family decided to emigrate. Simon started at Base Woodbourne and fell in love with Marlborough. “Hellene and I were sitting outside

at our home in the Sounds…and we looked at each other and said ‘this is the first time in 25 years we have felt at home,” he said. Marlborough has allowed Simon to continue coaching rugby too. A former coach of both the England Women and Northampton Saints Aviva Premiership sides, he was involved in professional coaching for 12 years. Since arriving in Marlborough, he has coached Moutere and the Marlborough Red Devils, but is currently taking a break. He said he has even started supporting the All Blacks, although Hellene continues to support her native Wales. And as for cheese making, Simon admitted it was a happy accident. Early last year Simon returned permanently to Marlborough after a stint commuting to Auckland, and he began to think about his next move. “Someone asked me if I made cheese, and I said ‘it can’t be that hard,” he said. “I bought the stuff from Mapua and got some milk from my neighbour’s goat herd, and I thought ‘I reckon we can make a business out of it.” The family built a cheese room at the end of their Linkwater home, and 18 months ago Cranky Goat was born. “It’s a great name. It’s turned out to be quite an inspired choice,” Simon said. “It’s quite a good icebreaker.” Currently, the company only makes feta, and Simon has set a limit of 100 kilograms of cheese a week. However, he said Marlborough could look forward to two new cheeses. “One’s going to be washed in Sauvignon Blanc, and the other’s going to be a French goats’ cheese rolled in raisins, and soaked in Grappa.” Simon’s set September as a tentative release date.

Survivor grateful to Cancer Society Glenys shares her breast cancer story Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Last year’s Daffodil Day proved to be an upsetting time for Picton woman Glenys Pope, who was facing a breast cancer diagnosis. “Walking around and seeing all the yellow balloons and flowers was a strong reminder of what I was about to face. It was the scariest experience of my life and all I wanted to do was pop the balloons and throw away the flowers,” she said. Glenys found a lump at the side of her left breast and immediately had the feeling that something was wrong. Three years prior, she had a biopsy done on a lump which came back fine, and later had a mammogram which came back clear. “I was in between mammogram appointments when I found the lump, so it goes to show that women need to be checking themselves regularly, and not relying solely on mammograms,” she said. Glenys’s ‘intuition’ that something was amiss could be what helped saved her life. Instead of ignoring the lump she had it checked and after scans, biopsies and tests Glenys underwent a double mastectomy. “It was something I never expected. It was a huge blow when I found out,” she said. The operation was followed by six chemotherapy

treatments, and now completed, Glenys takes daily hormone medication to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. “I was happy to not need radiation.” Today Glenys is positive about life as a breast cancer survivor and is hugely thankful to the Marlborough Cancer Society for the support she received. “I had friends telling me to make contact with the society, and when I did I found them to be wonderful. “Margot Wilson was there to explain a lot to me and would often phone me to keep in touch. “She took what was a doom and gloom situation and helped me to understand what I was going through and even put a smile on my face. “The hospital and specialists provide you with all the medical info, but it’s the mental and emotional side of having cancer that you need to be prepared for, and that’s where the Marlborough Cancer Society helped me. “So this Daffodil Day I won’t be crying, instead I will be promoting the invaluable work that the Cancer Society does and will be signing up to volunteer,” she said. Support the Marlborough Cancer Society this Friday by donating to the Daffodil Day fundraising Breast cancer survivor Glenys Pope with this year’s Daffodil Day bear ‘George’. event.

The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, whose bright yellow blooms remind us of the joys the new season will bring. It represents the hope there is for the 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer. Donations received on Daffodil Day go towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

Allison wins new Vespa

Must be available for Saturday work references required Please phone 021 262 2612 and leave a message

Blenheim woman Allison Daldorf has been named the first winner of a national eyecare competition, winning herself a Vespa Primavera. The Essilor/Transitions competition was open to customers who purchased Essilor Transitions lenses. Alison and husband Ken both chose Transitions lenses when they recently visited Barry Gainford Eyecare, where she has been a patient for around 20 years. Allison got Transitions in two pairs, for reading and distance, and Ken also got Transitions in his new pair. She was thrilled to be told she had won the Vespa. “I never win anything despite taking raffles and tickets in everything that is going. My husband and I would not consider going anywhere else other than to Barry Gainford Eyecare. They are such a nice group of people at the practice,” she said. Both in their late 70s, Allison said they don’t have plans to ride the Vespa, although they intend keeping it for their eight grandchildren to share. “It’s hard for us to entertain them when they come to stay but now we have this, they’ll enjoy riding it in our cul-de-sac and we’ll enjoy watching them,” she said. The competition ends on September 30, so there is still one more Vespa to be won for a patient, plus all participating practices go into the draw to win one.

Elective operations number high The latest National Health Target results show more people in the Nelson/ Marlborough region are having elective operations than ever before. An all-time high number of elective operations were performed this quarter, three per cent more than planned. Other statistics showed 90 per cent of eight-month olds were fully immunised, protecting children from illnesses such as whooping cough, and every patient ready for cancer treatment received it within the world gold standard of four weeks. More patients were also being checked for diabetes and heart disease. Health minister Tony Ryall said the results were encouraging for the region. “These results reflect the hard work and dedication of staff to improving people’s health in Nelson and Marlborough. I congratulate you all on these great results. Your achievements improve patient care.” He said progress was being made throughout the country. “While there will always be room for improvement, the latest results show more progress is being made to meet these targets, and help New Zealanders live longer, healthier lives.”

NO OBLIGATION DOCTOR’S VEIN ASSESSMENT & SCAN OR COSMEDICAL CONSULTATION

Rid yourself of unsightly veins Dr David Orsbourn of enhanceskin, (Nelson), is making quite a name for himself in Blenheim. In August 2013 he performed Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) of Varicose Veins for the very first time in Marlborough at the Churchill Private Hospital. A year down the line, David finds that he doesn’t need to spread the word about how wonderful this treatment is, because his patients are doing it for him. He says; “People can’t believe the difference it makes, it’s quite literally life changing.” Now the word is out, David finds he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients who took advantage of this new, non-invasive procedure last year and are wearing shorts again. We asked Dr David Orsbourn why he believes the new treatment is so popular, he replied; “It’s in demand because people suddenly discover there are options for successful and non-invasive treatments right here in Blenheim, they no longer have to travel out of town. Plus our payment plan options reduce any potential financial barriers,” he said. The great advantage this method of treatment has over surgery is that there is minimal downtime or impact on your usual daily living over the weeks following your procedural appointment. You will simply need to wear

compression stockings and avoid immediate international air travel. Asked whether the surgery is painful, David assures us that he’s compared favourably to the dentist. The treatments offered are all outpatient procedures and require no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. “You quite literally walk in and walk out, and in fact you’re able to drive home afterwards”. It’s clear that David has a real passion for what he does “I never tire of seeing the profound effect these treatments have. To know that I’ve helped improve a clients quality of life, is just gold, it means I’ve done what I set out to do.” Another positive is that enhanceskin has Affiliated Provider status with Southern Cross, and is accepted by most other Insurance Companies. What’s more enhanceskin offers free no-obligation Varicose Vein Assessments with Ultrasound Mapping. The success of the Blenheim vein clinics has resulted in the availability of additional cosmetical services and treatments. Cosmetic Botulinum and Dermal Fillers are now conveniently accessible in Blenheim. Nobody knows what you are visiting Dr David Orsbourn for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment..... so your secret to looking refreshed is safe with enhanceskin.

The 2013 Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year won the title after her opponent in the final, New Zealand number one Joelle King, snapped an achilles tendon in the second set. It is Craig’s first full national title, and she is Marlborough's first national champion. Craig's Canterbury women's team finished third, with Central winning the title. The meet was held on the North Shore last week.
